That's right, no one can guarantee you a #1 listing on a search engine like Google or Yahoo. Yet there are many companies out there that make false promises like a top ten search engine listing. There are no shortcuts and no secrets, but there are a few simple steps you must take if you want to get listed better that your competition. It is called website optimization. Before you submit your website to the search engines, you need to add "Meta Tags". These will make it accessible to the search engine "Spiders". To do this you must have access to your website's text editor or the ability to modify your HTML code. When you are viewing you HTML code, the meta tags are found between the <head> and </head> section near the top of the page. It will look similar to the example below:
There may be other content in the <head> section that you should not modify, but the "KEYWORDS", "DESCRIPTION" and "title" are mandatory. The text in red is the only thing you need to modify to personalize the meta tags to make it search engine friendly. Use up to 50 words or short phrases in the "Keywords" content line. Use 1 or 2 short sentences in the "Description" content line and use 1 quality sentence for your "title". Use words that you would think your visitors would use to search for your website. You may copy the above code and paste to your website's text editor in the <head> section. (note: some free websites do not allow you to access your HTML code or will modify them when you save your work. One location that does give you access to your HTML code for proper meta tag installation is http://builtfree.org) You can create your own Meta Tags right on this site for free! Use as many keywords as you can squeeze in within the context of the visual part of your page as you are working on it. First make sure your site is not already listed. Do a
search below using 2 or 3 of the keywords you would hope your visitors
would use to find your site. While you are searching, look at the websites
that come up. These are your competitors. Look at their websites and
see what they are doing. You can right click on an open field on
their page and choose "view source" to see their meta tags. Hints 1. Be patient after you submit your website. It may take up to 3 months for the search engines to "crawl" your site.
